Job Description

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), in partnership with the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMass Chan), is engaged in research centered on pediatric infectious diseases such as Plasmodium falciparum, Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), and the related endemic Burkitt Lymphoma. As part of its ongoing expansion, the KEMRI/UMass Chan laboratory is inviting applications from qualified, driven, and creative individuals to fill the following vacancy

Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities for this position include:

  • Receiving, collecting, and documenting study-related biological specimens

  • Isolating, quantifying, and cryopreserving Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs)

  • Performing molecular biology assays, including DNA extraction from biological samples and detecting Plasmodium falciparum and Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) using quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR)

  • Conducting immunological assays such as Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and multiplex bead assay for the analysis of Plasmodium falciparum, EBV, and other common pathogens

  • Preparing reagents and managing inventory of laboratory supplies

  • Documenting and reporting laboratory findings accurately

  • Maintaining an up-to-date inventory of all collected and generated samples in the laboratory

  • Conducting routine monitoring of laboratory equipment

  • Ensuring compliance with biosafety and biosecurity guidelines

  • Participating in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Fulfilling any other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Job Qualifications

The qualifications for this position are:

  • A Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Applied Sciences, Medical Laboratory Technology, Biotechnology, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution

  • Possession of a Registration Certificate and valid practicing license issued by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB), where applicable

  • Experience in molecular biology and immunological assays is preferred

  • Completion of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) trainings

  • Proficiency in computer applications
