secA Chief Research Scientist could be assigned to work within the following research areas: Oceans and Coastal Systems & Blue Economy, Freshwater Systems, Aquaculture, and Socioeconomics research areas.
i) Formulating aquatic and allied natural resources research and development policies
ii) Coordinating activities in specific research departments by engaging in prominent international forums and publications
iii) Identifying and leveraging opportunities to enhance the institute's international profile and reputation
iv) Drafting scientific manuscripts and book chapters for publication
v) Providing feedback and guidance to research scientists on scientific manuscripts and book chapters for publication
vi) Monitoring and evaluating research and development activities effectively
vii) Developing proposals to secure external resources for research and development
viii) Mentoring, supervising, and guiding scientists and technical staff within the department
ix) Compiling quarterly and annual reports for the department
x) Conducting staff performance appraisals
xi) Reviewing technical reports including journal papers, book chapters, research notes, technical notes, conference papers, and posters
xii) Disseminating research findings through local and international seminars, workshops, and conferences
xiii) Developing and coordinating the implementation of large multi-disciplinary national research programs
xiv) Managing budgeting and resources for research programs
xv) Ensuring adherence to institute and national marine and fisheries research policies
xvi) Providing guidance on scientific publications and research grant applications
xvii) Identifying innovations and technologies for scaling up, and providing mentorship
xviii) Supervising scientists and ensuring their adherence to research protocols
xix) Leading the practical application of scientific research results in national development initiatives
i) Possess at least ten (10) years of relevant experience, with three (3) years at the level of Principal Research Scientist or an equivalent position in a research institution in the public or private sector
ii) Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following disciplines: Mathematical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Social Sciences, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, aquatic, fisheries, or other relevant fields from a recognized institution
iii) Hold a Master’s Degree in any of the following disciplines: Marine or Fisheries Sciences, Biological or Physical Sciences, Sociology, Economics, Biometrics, Environmental Studies, or equivalent from a recognized institution
iv) Hold a Doctorate Degree in any of the following disciplines: Aquatic or Fisheries Sciences, Biological or Physical Sciences, Sociology, Economics, Biometrics, Environmental Studies, or equivalent from a recognized institution
v) Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Aquatic Resources Sector
vi) Have a minimum of twelve (12) peer-reviewed publications in ISI-indexed journals/book chapters, with at least six (6) as first author at the level of Principal Research Scientist or its equivalent position
vii) Complete a management course lasting no less than four (4) weeks, or its equivalent, from a recognized institution
viii) Provide evidence of engagement in community work or contributions to the country
ix) Provide evidence of attracting development/research funds as Co/Principal Investigator in a large project
x) Be a member of a professional body/association
xi) Possess strong interpersonal, communication, facilitation, and presentation skills
xii) Demonstrate outstanding professional competence reflected in work performance and a thorough understanding of national goals, policies, objectives, and their relation to research and development functions
xiii) Demonstrate proficiency in computer skills
xiv) Meet the requirements outlined in Chapter 6 of the Constitution
